An artist known for harmoniously blending Eastern and Western influences with an unbridled freedom and boldness in experimentation.
The art of Yang Chang is multifarious. His early years saw his foundation grounded in Chinese watercolour, after which he came to challenge and experience calligraphy, seal engraving, sculpting, and more. Honed over decades of dedication, his myriad of skills and techniques stand testament for themselves. There is great joy in reaching a level of mastery in each form, yet the true value of what he has attained goes beyond.
The simplicity of Zen from traditional watercolour. The awe and presence of a single calligraphic character. The intricate attention and focus on detail in seal engraving. The fullness of composition seen in sculptures.
A distinctive hallmark of Yang Chang is how he effortlessly captures the spirit of different disciplines and blends them harmoniously in his art. Amongst contemporaries and collectors, he is known for an unbridled freedom in bringing together Eastern and Western influences, and an uncharacteristic boldness in experimentation. Still, Yang Chang’s art excites not solely because of his firm grasps of Eastern styles and techniques or his encapsulating understanding and experimental application of Western influences.
His art excites because it is inspired. This transcends the keen audacity of how he composes his works and pieces them together, or in the splendid splays of colour he adorns them with. His inspiration is found in the simpler things of life. In the shine of apples at the supermarket, in the gentle rustling of leaves, in the gregarious laughter of a friend, a new creation is born. In the warmth of his hues, in the contemplative silence of his brushstrokes, in the revelation of his own humanity, his art invites.

Hear from collectors and curators about the artist's unique approach.
"His artistic expression transcends traditional 'Chinese painting'... fearlessly delving into 'golden leaves and white flowers,' infusing his artwork with a unique personal perspective."
— He Gong Shang (何恭上)
"His paintings embody the pure, vibrant essence of life... Whether ink or oil, realistic or abstract, each artwork emanates a genuine emotion... His unassuming yet enchanting style evokes a delightful allure."
— Du Nanfa (杜南发)
"Physically commanding, his paintings reveal a sensitive soul achieving unparalleled artistic vision... His depictions of 'Cats and Women' leave an indelible impression, and the unconventional use of Pu-erh tea adds unique intrigue."
— He Hua (何华)
"Arranging plum blossoms in his treasured indigo vase... he captures a sense of peace and serenity, evoking a contemplative nostalgia for antiquity ('思古幽情'), much like the masters before him."
— He Gong Shang (何恭上)
